Jose Chongo Zita

Environmental Finance Specialist for the Africa Region (Portuguese)

Jose Chongo Zita has more than 15 years of experience working in environmental management, natural resources management and biodiversity.

He worked for 8 years at UNDP Mozambique Country Office in different roles.  He served as the Environmental Finance Expert for the BIOFIN project, where he led the initiation of the BIOFIN process in the country, in partnership with national stakeholders, and he led the development of the Biodiversity Expenditure Review and Finance Needs Assessment, during the project methodology phase. He also served as the project manager of the Diversification of Ecosystem Services and Promotion of Finance Sustainability of Protected Areas project and helped to introduce new business processes and practices in the national system of conservation areas, to enhance revenues and sustainable financing. As the BIOFIN national project coordinator, he spearheaded the implementation of prioritized biodiversity finance solutions and supported the CO in wider resource mobilization efforts for biodiversity programs.

Before joining UNDP, Jose worked for six years as an environment and natural resources management consultant, being part of some of the leading consultancy firms in the field in Mozambique, such as CONSULTEC and VERDE AZUL.

Jose has bachelor’s degree in Agronomy from Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique and a master’s degree in environmental management and development from the Australian National University, Australia. He speaks fluently Portuguese and English.

Before joining UNDP, Jose worked for six years as an environment and natural resources management consultant, being part of some of the leading consultancy firms in the field in Mozambique, such as CONSULTEC and VERDE AZUL Jose will be home based in Africa.
