Delegations form 12 countries that cover the iconic Snow leopard's range came together with conservation experts and leaders in August 2017 for the International Snow Leopard and Ecosystems Forum in Bishkek. The Bishkek Declaration 2017 was endorsed by countries to ensure the preservation of the Snow Leopard and the mountain ecosystems in the region. BIOFIN works in five Snow Leopard range countries and together with UNDP-GEF works on several initiatives to mobilise finance for conservation efforts directly in Snow Leopard habitats and beyond. This poster was presented highlighting some of the initiatives in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Bhutan, Kyrgyzstan and India.

Bhutan's biodiversity - For happiness and development

Publications

The Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), the Poverty and Environment Initiative (PEI) and the Governance of Climate Finance Programme’s Climate Public Expenditure Review (CPEIR), implemented with UNDP support, provide a valuable entry point to link the new SDG prioritization and Bhutan’s national Five Year Plans with financing instruments. This is particularly important in an era where national resource mobilization and private sector contributions need to be blended with Official Development Assistance (ODA) and climate finance, and where development partners and the public demand higher levels of resource and institutional efficiency.

In Bhutan, efforts are underway to combine processes to develop an integrated financing strategy to ensure a pro-poor sustainable financing of environment, biodiversity and climate change. The proposed integrated financing framework encompasses an analysis of current policies, institutions and processes; building partnerships among sectors; and a common green resource mobilization plan. A combined methodology integrating processes of Climate Finance and BIOFIN has been proposed based on the stepwise approach that countries can adapt.
