One of BIOFIN Mexico's finance solutions is to develop a forest carbon protocol for forestry projects of capture and storage of emissions in the framework of the new carbon market set by the General Law on Climate Change. This is to include biodiversity and social considerations in the voluntary carbon market that is to be developed in the country.
This finance solution contributes to increase resources, realign expenditures and avoid futures expenditures. Carbon forest projects increase the opportunity cost of forests, giving more value to conserve and sustainable use of forests than using the land for agricultural activities. This finance solution also has the potential to be an economic development alternative for communities. BIOFIN intends to develop the technical considerations of the protocol, as well as analyze the emissions market in Mexico that encourages forest carbon projects.
In this sense, the North America Carbon World (NACW) event happening on April 24th-26th, 2019 in Los Angeles, California is a great opportunity to learn about climate policy, markets, and finance; as well as to connect with business, NGOs, government and academic leaders at North America’s largest carbon event. Attending the event created by the Climate Action Reserve (CAR) will make you gain insights, resources, and collaborative opportunities from NACW’s expert speakers, technical workshops, tours, and networking. This workshop is a great opportunity to know about the carbon markets, cap-and-trade and the financial feasibility for forest carbon projects.
In Mexico there have been two succesful forest carbon projects. Therefore, BIOFIN Mexico is exploring the possibility of helping a resin and reforestation company to add carbon bonds in order to raise its internal rate of return. In Mexico, there is an on-going work on defining the details of the nation’s cap-and-trade program, so BIOFIN Mexico wants to take this opportunity to create a forest carbon protocol -as a finance solution, in the context of the voluntary carbon market. During the NACW workshop, there will be specific sessions on the forestry side of the thriving Mexican carbon market.
