4 February 2026 – Representatives of public institutions, the productive and financial sectors, civil society and international cooperation organizations took part in a workshop under the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN). The workshop focused on reviewing public policies, institutional roles and biodiversity-related spending in El Salvador.
The meeting aimed to consolidate technical progress and identify opportunities to finance biodiversity in the short term. Participants discussed:
- The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), which guides the country’s environmental planning.
- Progress on the Policy and Institutional Review (PIR), including existing financing mechanisms and opportunities to develop them further.
- The technical parameters and information needed to advance the Biodiversity Expenditure Review (BER).
Participating institutions provided input to strengthen the analysis and help develop a financing approach that increases and makes better use of public, private and international resources for biodiversity.
UNDP BIOFIN’s methodology has four core components: the Policy and Institutional Review (PIR), which examines policies and institutions relevant to biodiversity finance; the Biodiversity Expenditure Review (BER), which assesses how much the country spends on biodiversity; the Financial Needs Assessment (FNA), which identifies funding needs and priorities; and the Biodiversity Finance Plan (BFP), which sets out a national roadmap for action.
UNDP BIOFIN works in more than 130 countries, supporting efforts to close biodiversity finance gaps and mobilize resources for nature. In El Salvador, the initiative is led by the Ministry of Finance in coordination with the Ministry of Environment, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
UNDP will continue to support El Salvador’s national biodiversity priorities through technical analysis, dialogue among institutions and the design of tools to mobilize resources efficiently and transparently.
