UNDP BIOFIN Sudan held two technical workshops in Khartoum in September 2026 to strengthen the evidence and institutional coordination needed to translate biodiversity priorities into financing decisions.
The Policy and Institutional Review Validation Workshop examined the policies, laws, institutions and financial conditions shaping biodiversity conservation in Sudan. Participants reviewed coordination and capacity gaps and identified opportunities to strengthen biodiversity finance.
The Biodiversity Expenditure Review Consultation and Data-Collection Workshop focused on biodiversity-related spending and investment. Participants examined available financial records, identified data gaps and discussed institutional follow-up to support data collection and expenditure analysis.
The workshops brought together representatives from government ministries and technical agencies, environment and natural-resource institutions, finance and planning bodies, forestry and wildlife institutions, academia, development partners, civil society and the private sector. Their participation reflects the importance of involving the institutions that plan, allocate, regulate and invest financial resources alongside those responsible for conservation.
These activities followed the first BIOFIN Sudan Steering Committee meeting on 27 August 2026. The committee provided strategic guidance, endorsed the project workplan, supported the activation of the Technical Working Group and reinforced institutional support for data collection and technical assessments.
Together, these steps will help Sudan understand how biodiversity is currently financed and identify opportunities to mobilize resources and improve the use of existing funding.
