Douala, Cameroon, February 2026 — Government institutions and partners met in Douala from 24 to 27 February to review progress on Cameroon’s Policy and Institutional Review under UNDP BIOFIN. The assessment examines how policies, institutions and existing finance mechanisms affect the country’s ability to fund its biodiversity priorities.
Convened by UNDP in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development, the workshop brought together representatives of government, the private sector, civil society and technical and financial partners.
The review is an early step in Cameroon’s biodiversity finance planning process. It is intended to identify opportunities to improve coordination across institutions, address policy barriers and make better use of resources for nature. Its findings will inform the country’s work to develop a Biodiversity Finance Plan with practical solutions for conservation and sustainable use.
The meeting also examined a separate study on Cameroon’s readiness to access carbon market opportunities, supported by UNDP’s Climate Promise. Discussing the two studies together gave participants an opportunity to consider how biodiversity and climate finance policies relate to one another, while assessing each through its own process.
Cameroon launched UNDP BIOFIN in July 2025 with support from the Global Environment Facility. The February workshop marked a further step in building the evidence and cooperation needed to translate the country’s biodiversity commitments into financing decisions.
