Five ways to finance our oceans - from global to local
Ocean finance is one of our defining challenges, but surprisingly overlooked. This event will showcase 5 of the most promising financing interventions, from global to local, from public to private and including greening finance and financing green.
Duration: 60 min
Date: 20 October 18:00 – 19:00
Co-organisers: UNDP, UNCDF, UNOPS
Location: Blue Zone, Netherlands Pavilion
Description
A panel will review a broad spectrum of financing options for our oceans, including global and local solutions, followed by a discussion with contributions from the audience. Five case studies will be shared related to (1) Rethinking agricultural and infrastructure subsidies that impact our oceans (2) National/local solutions including blue bonds, visitation fees, marine protected area fees and tourism incubators for IPLCs and women groups (3) Global mechanisms such as the Global Fund for Coral Reefs and the One Ocean Finance concept (4) A private sector rep.
Outcomes
Develop a broad understanding of the existing and potential seascape for ocean finance that needs to be approached in a holistic way. Beyond COP 17 the idea is to expand these solutions in more areas and countries and scale up to meet the financing needs of developing countries.
